Birdwatching Across Bohemia & Moravia

After eight years of early mornings at fishponds, forest edges, and river valleys, I have compiled everything I know about birding in the Czech Republic. These are not recycled guidebook entries. They are routes I walk, hides I sit in, and species I have learned to find reliably.

What to Expect Each Season

Spring

Migration Peaks

March through May brings warblers, flycatchers, and raptors moving north through river corridors and wetlands.

Summer

Breeding Activity

June and July offer nesting bee-eaters in South Moravia, kingfishers along streams, and dawn choruses in old-growth forests.

Autumn

Southbound Passage

August to October sees waders at fishponds, cranes staging in fields, and raptors riding thermals over ridgelines.

Winter

Hardy Residents

Woodpeckers, nuthatches, and finch flocks dominate feeders. Open water attracts wintering ducks and occasional rarities.

Background

Why I Built This Site

I moved to Brno in 2018 with a pair of budget binoculars and no idea where to start. The Czech birding community was welcoming but most resources were in Czech, and the English-language guides focused almost entirely on Prague parks.

Over the following years I explored systematically: South Moravian fishponds, the Sumava highlands, sandstone formations in Bohemian Switzerland, and the lowland forests along the Dyje River. I kept detailed notes on timing, access, and which species appeared where.

This site turns those personal records into something others can use. Everything here comes from direct observation. When I mention a location, I have walked it. When I describe a species as reliable at a certain spot, I have seen it there repeatedly across multiple seasons.

How This Site Works

Field-tested information

Personal Observation

Every location has been visited at least three times across different seasons before I write about it. Single visits produce unreliable conclusions.

No Sponsorships

I buy my own equipment and pay my own travel costs. Recommendations here reflect genuine experience, not commercial arrangements.

Regular Updates

Access conditions and bird populations change. I revisit content when conditions shift and note update dates on every page.
